I have Eucomis autumnalis, E. not-pole-evansii (Robert suggests it is E. pallidiflora). They are wintered over in their pots, kept totally unwatered, in my basement. The autumnalis stays decently dormant until I bring them upstairs, repot or top-dress, and begin watering. They multiply generously. The pallidiflora, I have learned, is going to start growing earlier than it can go outdoors, in the dark, untended and unwatered. As I do have a greenhouse once they have made an appearance that is where it goes. One season of etiolated falling over foliage was enough. One bulb is now two, and apparently feels that is all I need, no further increase. Kathy, I would keep your eucomis growing over the summer. Fertilize maybe 2 or 3 times with dilute liquid fertilizer lower in nitrogen, higher in phosphorus and potash. Sometime before next January buy a grow-light setup - in the past I have used a 4 foot long, 4 tube shoplight unit with 2 cool white, 2 warm white fluorescent tubes but there are much superior lights available today.
