Seed donation

Uli's comments about receiving seed from the exchange and not seeing it donated in subsequent exchanges, failures notwithstanding (we all have those!), is of great concern, given his current situation. He is unable to send seed without a phyto. This is happening more and more and until our necessity for free exchange and the reality of how seed ought to be allowed across borders catches up with the new phyto rules, we must think about sharing whenever we can to offset this extreme difficulty.

So, everyone, if you receive seed, especially more than a few in one packet, hold some back in case you have difficulties germinating it. Let folks know so a member who is experienced at growing that plant can perhaps offer a suggestion on trying a different method. If you have success, and some of these bulbs take several years to mature and set seed, please donate to the exchange or pass along to another member so that two or more of you are growing it with the hope that eventually there will be enough to donate.

For members, this is and will continue to be a frustration - this business of phytos - so it's ever more important to support the societies that are working to change these rules. We would not have so many plants available to us if it weren't for amateurs like us who went plant hunting and for others who grew the resulting finds and passed them along.

If you're new to growing from seed, consult the PBS wiki and ask members on the list. Someone, somewhere will likely know how to grow a particular seed.

Good luck to you all,

Robin Hansen
