Re. the Algarve iris Uli showed us, Iris pallida can have a very tall flowering stem. After the unusually warm winter and spring here, the tallest stems are about 120 cm. There are several color forms; I have a plain lavender one, and a bicolor of light and dark lavender/purple. The latter, I was told, came from Hungary. This species has a distinctive fragrance that resembles Concord grapes (think Welch's grape juice). The photo of Dipcadi serotinum was also nice to see. This small bulbous plant can be grown easily from seed, but I've found it not very cold-hardy. It is an obscure plant in two ways: little known among gardeners, and hard to spot the dull tan flowers.
