California, at least in the interior northern Santa Lucia, is very dry. Definitely not a good spring bloom season even in the usual best spots...steep dry meadows, The heaviest flowering is among the various species of Ceanothus (California Lilac), isolated patches of Eschscholzia caespitosa (Tusfted Poppy) and Lupine. At higher moist locations, Primula clevelandii (Padre's Shotting Star) is still blooming. Everywhere, the dependable Dichelostemma capitatum (Blue Dicks) was blooming lightly. Saw one orchid (maybe a Piperia) not yet in bloom. Here and there the usual Salvias (Hummingbird Sage, Chia) and Castilleja (Indian Paintbrush). Looking forward, Calochortus albus (Fairy Lantern) are in bud. Oh, how could I forget the largest geophyte, Marah fabacea (Manroot) tangling in the understory starting its unimpressive bloom. Here and there, pleasant thin carpets of small annuals (Leptosiphon, tiny yellow Asteraceae), but the usual medium sized annuals were mostly absent except in north facing gullies.
