Personally, I am safe here at Telos. I am surrounded by dairy farms, all pasture. However yesterday the whole sky and ground fog was dark blood red all day, needing all the lights on in the house. We are surrounded by fires, north near Medford, south near Willits, with a large fire pushing towards Humboldt county (our county) from the east. Another large fire burning northeast in the Siskiyou mountains. Most roads out of the area are closed. Ash is raining down. Where I used to live in Oroville in the Sierra foothills a huge fire is burning and my old neighborhood has been evacuated. The small communities of Berry Creek and Lake Madrone, places I know very well, just a few miles from my old house are totally destroyed. Paradise has been evacuated, at least the few people who still live there. I have never seen anything like yesterday with blood red skies, it looked like the end of the world. Everything was deep red, the sky, the buildings all the vegetation. This lasted until late afternoon when things lightened to orange. It was dark and cold, like a nuclear winter, and I needed heat on. It feels like everything is gone, these beautiful forests, the small communities that they hosted, the wildlife. I am lucky living in redwood country near the ocean where I am safe from fire, flooding is more of a problem here in winter. I am heartbroken for the state I have lived in most of my adult life, a state I have loved with a passion, feeling it was one of the most beautiful places on earth to live.
