In San Francisco, so insulated from the wildfires, but the smoke is impressive, and the ash in the fog can't be doing the leaves any good. The heat did toast some exposed leaves (at 100F). However, most of the wilderness I hike and enjoy is threatened by fire, possibly catastrophically. I posted a picture of Calochortus macrocarpus earlier, fire burned to the edge of the Warner Wilderness it was in. Over the weekend, when all the fires were exploding, I was on a trailwork trip 10 miles/15km from an active fire (but not one with the ability to travel quickly)...we got high smoke from the Creek Fire (100 miles/150km) away that blotted out the sun Saturday afternoon. The Ventana Wilderness where I was hoping to collect seeds from Asclepias californicus is burning and closed to entry (as are all California National Forests). But I'm safe and lucky...I can just stay home and putter in the garden, planting more Mediterranean geophytes (some of which would probably benefit from a gentle fire from time to time!)
