Hi,

I am a new member based in the UK. I have a Plant Molecular Genetics based (including IT) background. I host my own small sites and servers etc. and have been the ‘webmaster’ of a number of online groups in the past.

I would not move to facebook because I don’t think it would suit, from what I have seen and read so far, the needs of this group.

Facebook does have a value in terms of ‘publicity’ and ‘ease of use’ etc. but is not for everyone for many different reasons. The group should avoid bifurcation that, for example, might dilute the access to the level of expertise and information available in this group.

I believe a closed (members only) on line forum would suit the ‘discussion' needs of this small group very well. I would seriously look at forum software like ‘Discourse’ (which ‘out of the box’ is clear and concise and easy to use etc.).

Personally, as I am coming to this list with no experience of if, I find it outdated, cumbersome and more than a little confusing most of the time. It seems like something out of the early 1990s? The way it handles images is poor and again, often obscure. I am though, starting to get used to it.

These are just my thoughts on the matter, given the current discussion.

Kind regards

Mark
UK.
