Hi Carol, I don't think it's a virus - more like a "late descision" to become a leaf and not part of a flower. Technically in aroids, the flowers are small units arranged in the spadix, while the colorful part, the Spatha, is a transformed leaf. You can see similar "half flower, half leaf" - states in other plants that use colored leafs as extension of the flower - e.g. in Euphorbia pulchella.
