It doesn't, it keeps them and other pests from sheltering in the pot or
infesting the root zone from below. In the past I've found slugs
inhabiting the base of pots, this keeps them out.

I use window screen at the base of my pots to keep slugs, sowbugs, ants
and earwigs from making themselves at home in my pots.
