Thank you Uli for the information on all those bulbs and seeds you donated. My experience with Tropaeolum hookerianum has been much the same as yours, except frost tolerance. [And I suspect item 136 is from me since I sent seeds of that, var. austropurpureum. Mine are from tubers I got from Telos a decade ago.] Here we get light frost at least. few days each winter, some winters down to 28F. Last winter I did not cover my Tropaeolum at all and it got no damage from frost, the same frost that melted the garden variety nasturtiums nearby. One of mine is in full sun and grows as well as the one in shade part of the day. All are in 18 inch deep bulb boxes. I have found tubers as deep as 18 inches! My tubers do not like to get over 60F warm even in dry storage. They do better if left undisturbed. Great description of the emerging shoots. I got few seeds this year and sent them all to the BX but in past years this species has been a "profligate reseeder", appearing up to a meter away. This year I am trying to grow T. azureum again. I have not had success with T. azueum yet so I am interested if anyone has tips on that species. Uli wrote "Tropaeolum hookerianum ex Chileflora. The easiest blue Tropaeolum with me. Flowers the first year from seed. Sow IMMEDIATELY, soak the seed over night before sowing. Dislikes hot weather in spring which will induce premature dormancy, keep it as cool as possible and partially shaded. Frost free. Good in deep pots. In the open garden tubers will disappear deep down somewhere. The emerging shoot of mature tubers is hairlike and almost invisible, prone to damage. Needs something finely structured to climb on." A few notes on the notes: "beginner's choice" is a great idea to note. Although I have been growing - or trying to grow - bulbs from seeds for years, it is nice to have some successes mixed in with the challenges. The 3-day window for requests is good for several reasons, one of which is time to use notes such as Uli's today. I like to keep provenance information about all the seeds I grow. Sometimes BX listings which include provenance are more appealing to me. So I appreciate your extra notes.
