" I have not tried Turface. Turface looks cheaper but gets mixed reviews from Bonsai growers. Has anyone tried those?" Used Turface MVP for years as an amendment for growing bulbs in the frost free greenhouse in CT. It was OK. Not so here in NE North Carolina with the much higher humidity and temperatures. Have discontinued it's use and now go with coarse perlite or graniite grit or sometimes grey paver base coarse sand.
