There are rootless amaryllis for sale in my supermarket - just sitting in
glass vases. Their bulbs are encased in wax of various colours. They are
meant for non-gardeners who will presumably just throw them out when they
finish flowering.

I wonder if they would grow normally if someone rescues one that has been
tossed out?
