Lisa - the easiest way to differentiate between H amarylloides and H humilis is in the leaves. There are 3 ssp of H amarylloides, the most commonly grown being ssp amarylloides and ssp polyanthus. Both of these have a pair of long narrow glossy green leaves no more than 40mm wide that tend to stand upright (as much as gravity will allow) whereas H humilis has broader flat leaves that generally sit flat on the ground or arch slightly. There is a good pic of the pair of upright leaves on the PBS wiki.
