Thanks David. Here it seems that the bulbs are hardier and the leaves and flower stalks stand up better to wind if the neck is below the soil level. I've found they can be planted 3-4" below without damage. Good drainage is essential. This article in laidbackgardener recommends the same if planting them cooler than zone 9.
