Years ago we hired a young biologist who was doing research on the mechanism of heat production in the spadex. As it turns out the plant produces about as much heat as a hummingbird and is mediated by salicylic acid - the original aspirin. I gave a planted corm to my son who was living on campus. He was shocked to discover the stench the plant produced. The heat helps volatilize the pheromone to attract the pollinating flies.
