I agree with Rhoda that Rod and Rachel will always be with me as I wander through my garden, not only in the bulbs from their seed, but in the Erica species that Rod helped me figure out might grow in my climate and advised how to grow from seed. My husband and I were so fortunate to go on a number of trips with them looking for plants and were the recipients of so many kindnesses including hand holding when fording rushing streams, help maneuvering under and over barbed wire fences, driving our rental car to Middelpos when we arrived jet lagged, comfort when we stayed with them after 9/11, delicious home cooked meals and beds with hot water bottles on visits, taking us on special day trips to see plants when they were busy, and guiding us to places to go on our own. Rachel and I communicated frequently by email. I don't know how she found time to communicate with and help so many people. We have so many happy memories of our time spent together. I've looked through my photos and in so many of them Rachel was laughing. Laughing with good friends is so good for the soul. As I grieve I am also very grateful that they were part of our lives.
