reticulata species, Iris
Garak (Sun, 25 Feb 2018 09:04:17 PST)

Hi Dan,

my own Katherine is suffering, as it got cold again the instant they
started flowering:

actually, I can't confirm your comment about deep planting - it may
depend on more details: I've got one clump in a shallow bowl with
commercial peat free soil, which is happily multiplying and flowering at
most 3" deep. I had another clump in my open (heavy) ground, maybe a
little bit deeper, and it disappeared over the course of 3-4 years. what
type of soil are yours in?

Here is the popular Katherine Hodgekin, blooming today.

The iris was named for the wife of Elliot Hodgkin, an English

bulb enthusiast.

Plant the bulbs DEEP. Shallow planting makes the bulbs

"Rice out." They will break up into literally dozens of

tiny bulblets about the size of a grain of wheat,

that are difficult to collect and raise to blooming size.

Deep planting, 5-6 inches, and they will divide into

larger blooming size daughter bulbs, as seen here.
