I would like to add to these excellent comments that the Royal Horticultural Society book on propagation include squishing the soaking / fermenting mess which speeds the process and helps remove the pulp from the seeds. They also talk about swishing the bowl around and pouring off the pulpy mess, kind of like panning for gold. I would be cautious with small seeds though - don't want to lose the baby with the bath water. I like the hydrochloric acid suggestion, especially for seeds that need scarification (scratching) as it does two jobs in one. Great success to all!
