Zephyranthes reginae and Naked Ladies

Dear PBSer,

All Zephyranthesa are NOT hardy here in Kansas City, but I’ve kept a few in pots. Some like Z. candida, Z. citrina and Hab. grandiflora bloom well and put on a show.

Then there’s Z. reginae. I have watered and protercted a gallon pot for 8 years - 8 YRS - and this last week we had a number freak summer rain storms totalling around 10 inches of rain in a week. I got 2 (count ‘em) 2 flowers. I immediately checked flower chracters against the PBS wiki and they are true. Now I can donate these worthless bulbs to the Bulb Exchangee. Not worth 8 years of coddling. Better luck in a batter climate.

On another point, as much as facebook can be a joy of new plants, it is also frustratingly stupi. This is the season where pictures and experiences about Amaryllis belladonna and Lycoris squamigera mix insanely. Those who swear their picture of A. b is L. s and the ones who grow A. b. in Zone 3 etc. The once understandable common name ‘Naked Ladies’ makes no sense if you can’t tell an Amaryllis from a Lycoris . I discoverd this excellent wiki page and passed it along. I suggest you take a look if you still can’t tell a Lycoris from an Amaryllis http://pacificbulbsociety.org/.../inde.../… <http://l.facebook.com/l.php/…>
