Dear PBS, This has been a fairly awful winter with roller coaster temps up near 70s (once) and below 0F, (often) but mostly hovering around freezing and well below. Today was a ‘balmy’ 45 F and I found three ’spots of yellow’. The first were a couple of clumps of Crocus ancyrensis. This has been the earliest crocus to bloom here many times. Small flowers, but bright clear yellow flowers. Just down the path was a couple plants fo Adonis amurensis. Just a few flowers open, but many buds and unfurling ferny foliage. And finally, on a sunny slope, dozen of Eranthis hiemale. These basically emerge buds first from the soil and never fail to please. I wasn’t brave enough to go down to the bottom of the garden to check on Narc. ‘Rynveld’s Early Sensation’. I saw it emergin a few weeks ago, but brutal below 0 temps have surely ravaged the first flowers. Maybe a second round will have a chance to pop up if the weather improves. Right now the forecast includes a night of single digit temps and a couple days of snow. Every wrm spell brings out more color. Trying to be optimistic.
