My Sternbergia are planted in a raised edging. So they are well drained, a vital fact to Sternbergias. It is mild here, equivalent to Zone 10a, and they flower their little hearts out every autumn. Such a cheery sight on a dull, dark day. They get quite a bit of sun, but certainly not all day. Incidentally, it was an accidental planting, I knew nothing about these bulbs.
