I use summer green small Alliums among the central Aisian Fritilarias and Juno Iris, plunged on a sand bench, as indicators. If these Alliums start to go dormant I water them which stops seedling Junos dessicating. I also allow the occasional seedling of an annual 'Lupin' which likes the sand, (I'm not sure of it's exact identity).
