Personally I would not think of those people as gardeners. I fear
that gardening is slowly dying.
I believe that statistic includes food gardeners, whom we should not
dismiss even if they spend their $70 on seeds. Their efforts help to
protect the environment by encouraging local consumption.
Anybody want some zucchini?
