My most favorite species of Delphinium is D. nudicaule, a native of northern California and southwestern Oregon. The best form of this species are the scarlet red flowers with succulent leaves, such as ones found at the top of Mount Diablo in northern CA. The top of the mountain is just about 4000ft, and receives snow in winter. Photos of this form and several other forms can be seen on the wiki: http://pacificbulbsociety.org/pbswiki/index.php/… If anyone in colder climates would like to try a summer dry Delphinium that is hardy, high altitude form of this species would be a charm to have in the garden. I'm not sure how it responds to being grown in the ground though.
