Thanks for that response, Jim Waddick; you've convinced me that what I grow as Narcissus pachybolbus is not likely the real thing. There is a series of images here: http://www.imep-cnrs.com/tassili/listefloreV0.htm which illustrates this species in the wild. Now that I've seen these, I'm inclined to say that my plant is more likely a form of Narcissus tazetta itself, or something intermediate between tazetta and pachybolbus.
