The answer to the Rhodophiala question is obviously yes. Find a really large pot and repot the bulbs at the bottom of it. This way they will stop trying to go down and fatten instead. Of course the fatter the more mature (and nearing flowering size). On the plus side the bulbs are amazingly long lived.
Some swear by planting in pipe lenghts but I doubt they will be stable enough, unless you pack all pipes tightly inside a wooden or plastic box for stability.
