Have been looking the Tulbaghia family up on PBS and it is not the T. violacea, but the Tulbaghia simmleri (or T. fragrans). The leaves do not have a garlic smell and as I said, the flowers have a lovely spicy scent. Also the leaves look a bit like an Agapanthus. And according to the PBS info there is a white form, which must be the one I have. As the friend has lots of unusual plants in her garden, that would be quite likely. So thank you Jim and Aaron, pointing me in the right direction what to look for. Ina /**/
