Both spellings have Schott as the namer. I had never heard of him as a North American botanist so I looked him up. Heinrich Wilhelm Schott ( 1794 - 1865) spent several years botanizing in Brazil, and then was director of the Habsburg's Schönbrunn Palace gardens in Vienna, Austria. The type specimen of our skunk cabbage is probably there. He named 587 new species of aroids. There is information about him here: http://www.aroid.org/literature/ croat/history/earliest_specialists.html Diane Whitehead
