Allium schubertii

I've tried A. schubertii several times but have never been able to get them
to survive the winter in my zone 3 gardens.
I've got older seed (3 years) in a pot outdoors now and has been there since
November of 2005. I'll leave it out another winter to see if any germinate.
I was under the impression (wrong?) that it was a fairly hardy allium.
