A friend has a relatively remote place about an hour and a half out in the country. It is reached, after leaving the main roads, by a long drive on a fire road through a thick forest up a mountain side. You come out of the forest onto an idyllic scene: acres of rocky field planted here and there with clumps of apple trees. The first time I visited, as we came out of the forest we saw a herd of deer eating fallen apples under the trees. When the deer heard the car, they took flight. It was a beautiful sight. But there was more: as the deer ran away, the apple tree they were eating under began to shake. Before we knew it, a huge black bear tumbled out of the tree, regained its composure, and went trotting off into the woods. Very cool!
