Osteospermum fruticosum=african daisy was used by caltrans for a time in the 60-80's but found to be too woody and therefore needing too much maintenance. Gazania is still the choice for newer landscape and freeway projects at least in So. Calif. Ann Marie

Hmmm. In Southern California, the "freeway daisies" are Leptospermum.
You might want to check that... as far as I know, Leptospermum is the
Australian tea tree (though I've never seen it larger than shrub size).
It has tiny white or rose or pink flowers that are shaped like the
flowers on peach/plum trees. Take a look at these images of
leptospermum and see if this is what you were thinking of...
