Mary Sue was wondering which Scilla species could cope with wet winters. I have about the same rainfall as she does but it is colder here, being much farther from the coast. Having seen what Mary Sue is growing, I would encourage her to try any of the species I mentioned, although the North African ones might not tolerate wet freezing over a course of years. I did say the genus was easy from seed but I have to admit I was talking only about the Northern Hemisphere species. I have not grown any South African ones. I had the impression that the latter are rather large plants and probably a bit tender even for my unheated frames. Besides, I am afraid to start with Cape bulbs -- so many species, I'd need to double the frame space, and in a very cold year, they'd probably all die! Jane McGary Northwestern Oregon, USA
