Spring Seed Exchange Donations

Hello, Lisa,

Has banning donation of wild-collected seeds always been a PBS policy?
It seems extreme. I always prefer wild-collected seed to cultivated,
because the latter is likely to contain hybrids. If I donate seed from
home, I keep it to hand-pollinated species or those that don't have any
chance of hybridization here. It's very embarrassing to donate something
and hear, years later, that one has misnamed it. Of course, a lot of
wild seed does circulate under a "wrong" name, either because of
taxonomic disagreements or just because it's impossible to distinguish
the dry capsules of species in some genera. I've taken to adding
"received as" to the ID of some things I donate, if I can't verify them
precisely.

In any case, your winter SX will probably be almost all South African
and subtropical species, and likely out of people's greenhouses, rather
than of wild origin. So no worries at that point, anyway.

Best regards,

Jane McGary
