The parable of the Little Red Hen is indeed an apt metaphor for most clubs. However, the Little Red Hen had a well-understood, constructive goal, viz., producing bread.
I fear many of our members are skeptical that the nominating committee has a similarly productive goal. In local clubs, they try to recruit one candidate for each job knowing the rest of the membership will rubber stamp the slate. By contrast, here they are tasked with coming up with names that may likely then be shot down in an opaque process carried out by a tiny handful of insiders. Since these insiders will decide who their replacements will be, why not eliminate the middleman and have the Board recruit their own replacements directly, as did Tammany Hall and the Daley Machine back in the day. Sure saved those pesky citizens a lot of work!
Lastly, who wants to go through the personal embarrassment of cajoling a friend or colleague into volunteering in good faith, only to have that person publicly criticized and shot down by the real decision makers?
