Mulch of 1/4 10 gravel is really very effective, and I've used that and oyster shell to mulch pots. A rock garden, typically covered in gravel and rocks is very detrimental to these slimy critters. Of course, that leaves the bottoms of pots still unprotected but some protection is better than none. I used to see our native snail (quite colorful) but in town now there's no chance as they are very much forest dwellers. Our native banana slugs eat decayed matter. Do our western slugs do the same?
