Most wire mesh sold commercially is lightweight woven mesh that gophers go right through. Welded galvanized hardware cloth (1/4-1/2 inch mesh) cages probably can be bought somewhere, but at excessive cost and shipping. If you are handy with tin snips, you can cut and fold hardware cloth to make baskets, alternatively, planter box frames can be tacked together with hardware cloth attached to the open bottom and that can be set into the ground.
