a waxed amaryllis

I received one as a test /promo when I was writing my blog from one of the manufactures.
I thought it was silly, but free, so I went with it.

I was pleasantly surprised that it worked so well. Honestly, most amaryllis are just disposable for me anyway, in Massachusetts.
I wouldn’t buy one again for me though - just not my aesthetic, but I've bought them as Christmas gifts for people who I know are not plant people.

It's a novelty, clearly, but they do work as a one-shot. Of course, cutting roots off of an amaryllis will affect future bloom anyway.

I received one of these a couple of years ago. I peeled off the wax and potted it right away. I didn't wait. After they are done, I usually put them out back and they bloom again the next year but at a different time.Carolyn Craft

    Subject: [pbs] a waxed amaryllis

For Christmas I received an amaryllis bulb encased in silver wax. The instructions say it does not need water. It is slowly putting up leaves.

After it blooms, can I peel off the wax and put the bulb in a pot? Or is it meant as a throw-away?
