I often think they should make it illegal to plant elm trees in a yard! I have 6 100+ year old elms and they own the yard. They form a fibrous root mat not far from the surface and will send up tree shoots all over just like Diane's cherries. They also have the ability to find the least little crack in a pot or pipe, enter in, and form a huge, tight mass that sucks up all the water and nutrients. They make it impossible to build the soil or have perennials. I have to use pots ,and raised beds that are boxes, all on concrete steeping stones to insure there is not contact with the ground and the evil roots. It doesn’t just send roots over - the roots then send up cherry trees. It might be pleasant to have a cherry forest, but the raccoons and crows get all the fruit. The flowers are decorative, though.
