Hi, I have seen this plant twice in the wild in the Pyrenees and I'd rather call the habitat "montane meadows" than "damp grassy places". These mountains get (or used to get) rain througout the summer so the ground is damp, but this Iris does not live by streams like, say, Iris foetidissima. And yes, Jane is right, it belongs in subgenus Xiphion (Xiphium) so it has a summer resting bulb. It blooms in habitat in late July to late August.
