Bessera elegans in bloom.

Hi Colin,

I live in Toronto, northeastern North America. I plant mine in a pot in early May and water immediately. Growth usually commences within a month. They like a lot of moisture when in growth and easily tolerate hot, and humid weather. We have hot, dry, humid summers here along Lake Ontario. If the flowers are gnarled perhaps the bulbs have a virus. With respect to dormancy mine are still in leaf though it started showing signs of dormancy in September.

I hope this helps.

This is my second season with it and because I live in the cold Northeast I have no choice but to grow it in a pot and store it dry in the basement for the winter. I can attest to its slightly "thuggish" but welcome nature as mine has wonderfully overgrown its pot. I plan on dividing it in the spring of next year and if there's anyone who would like some, I'll send some tubers to the BX.

My Bessera bloomed in July and foliage has been gone for a month now, but I watered in the pots in may/June. Summers here are very hot (routinely over 90F and often around 100+). Past two years I have had some very gnarled flowers, almost appear as viral distortion, but perhaps it?s the high heat? Curious what other growers? experience is.
