Hi Mike What I find interesting is that the older large bulbs exposed on the surface, and internally too, in the middle of the more or less spherical clump, all of which had some apparently normal roots, may not have produced any flowers, or leaves, for some years. They just exist while the younger mostly smaller bulbs around them grow. Whether they all wake up now they are more or less similarly planted remains to be seen. This is true of many clumping plants of course, bulbous or not, but most make some attempt to grow before being shaded out. Root plate contact between them was very minimal; apparently. I don't know how A. belladonna behaves in the UK, but here in California they grow close to the surface, either with the tops at soil level or with the top quarter of the bulbs exposed. In my garden, blooming tapers off when the clumps get very crowded, although some of the bulbs in a clump will generally bloom each year. Longtime Amaryllis grower and breeder Les Hannibal said the best time to transplant them is during or just after bloom, because the roots are just starting to grow and the plant can more easily regenerate them. If you get the timing right, they won't necessarily skip the next year's blooms. They definitely do not appreciate root disturbance at other times of the year. Hope that helps.
