Oddly enough I just mentioned this to my husband today, continuing my comment to say that solar panels on the roof would sort of negate the greenhouse aspect of the structure. You might want to look for Winter Flowers in Greenhouse and Sun-heated Pit by Kathryn S. Taylor and Edith W. Gregg published by Charles Scribner & Sons in 1969. I remember Frank Cabot's pit greenhouse at Stonecrop in Cold Spring NY. As you can see from the image, the Morris Arboretum has a very elegant semi-pit fernery.
