Hi Judy We jumped the gun. Although in principle I would agree with you the bulbs were in a tight corner close to a wall at the end of a yard wide bed, so being "nice" to it would have been difficult and a very temporary fix. What we dug out was a tight ball of 30-40 bulbs, the lowest with its root plate ~ a foot deep. Oddly the flowering bulb was relatively small and between the "ball" and the wall; maybe the warmest position.. Last year the exposed surface bulbs produced few if any leaves, although they were sound enough, as there was a circle of leaves round the clump. All the bulbs, except a few I have, are now a foot or so deep and well covered. Hope you are recovering from your autumn deluge damage. Brian It is my understanding that Amaryllis belladonna does not appreciate root disturbance so even just lifting and resetting would be discouraging to the clump. Flower buds are formed the year prior to bloom. Possibly a sort of top dressing, digging around the clump and adding some organic matter to the top few inches would percolate down to the roots. Another option - liquid fertilizer, applied to the leaves. If your neighbour decides to do that, I would think a more dilute liquid fertilizer applied several times a few weeks apart might do better than a single full strength application. Judy in New Jersey where it is overcast, drizzling, and leaves, acorns, black walnuts are falling down On 10/10/2021 4:47 AM, Brian Whyer via pbs wrot Hi My neighbour has an old clump of Amaryllis belladonna against a low south facing wall. It had only 1 flower stem this year (just finishing) (4 last year) and has a number of bulbs exposed level with the surface. The soil is stoney chalky with many exposed flints. A few leaves are just showing, ~3 cms high. Would it be a good idea to lift and bury deeper? When should this be done? _______________________________________________ pbs mailing list _______________________________________________ pbs mailing list pbs@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net http://lists.pacificbulbsociety.net/cgi-bin/… Unsubscribe: <mailto:pbs-unsubscribe@lists.pacificbulbsociety.net>
