Saffron

I only planted mine about 5" deep in shaley clay but I put down 1/2"
hardware cloth buried about an inch to protect the bulbs from voles. It
makes it a little harder to dig up every few years to thin them out but the
hardware cloth comes up fine if you hit it with glyphosate a few times in
late spring to kill all the weed roots.
When I moved twenty years ago, I dug up a few hundred bulbs and tried to
"naturalize" them in my new lawn. I got one bloom that fall and the voles
found that one before the next year's bloom time.
