That's a long time to wait for something that is a coin toss to begin with." Not wanting to complicate the topic, but *in general* yellow Clivia are divided into groups (Group 1, Group 2, Group 3) and yellow Clivia crossed within a particular group will bloom yellow in the following generation. Crossing between groups or outcrossing with orange-flowered plants will produce orange flowers in the progeny. Also crossing a yellow with another yellow, either of which has orange flowers in its ancestory will/can produce *both* yellow and orange flowered plants (to clarify, not yellow and orange on the same plant). It is worth noting that *very* young seedlings from yellow parents which have no pigment in the base of the seedling (they will be green) will bloom yellow. Seedlings with pigment in the base will *not* bloom yellow. Therefore, you don't neccessarily need to wait (a l-o-n-g wait) for the progeny to bloom to determine that they will bloom yellow. You can select for the unpigmented seedlings and discard the seedlings with pigmented bases. I've had Clivia plants bloom from seed as early as 3½ years (rare), to as long as 10 years; the average being 5 to 6 years. These are generalizations, only, which mostly hold true.....but it can quickly become more complicated, particularly involving pastel-flowered plant parents. There is information on the web for those wanting to pursue further and more precise research into the subject of the breeding of yellow-flowered Clivia. I know that there are members that are more knowldgeable about this. Please feel free to correct, clarify, or expand on the information in this email. Mike, zn. 7, cool mediterranean, W.
