Last summer, I got a starter collection of Lachenalia bulbs from Telos (thanks, Diana!) and following the detailed instructions I planted them several inches deep, lightly watered them in, and then left them on the Dry Table of Death. As the weather began to cool in the fall, roots began to appear at the bottom of the containers, and eventually they all began to sprout. I moved them out into full sun and began watering, then into the greenhouse as cold weather approached. I have them in 50/50 promix/perlite. They have all been blooming nicely, shocking to me that all the foliage and blooms have come out of such tiny bulbs. The two pics are L. pustulata ("blue form") and L. vanzyliae, the latter being similarly colored to L. viridiflora, which bloomed a few months ago and had a bit more intense turquoise color, to my eye at least. Before all the nitpickers jump in, I'll state for the record that I understand these are both the subject of taxonomic debate between the lumpers and splitters (isn't everything) but call them what you may, they are lovely plants and to me it's fascinating to see things so well adapted to ridiculously harsh conditions. It's also fun to see how easy it can be sometimes to replicate harsh habitats that are completely foreign to East Tennessee. On a related note, thanks to the SX (and Gastil as well!), I have a bunch of containers filled with Lachenalia seedlings. They almost look like a patch of grass. If someone can tell me how/when to move them on to more spacious pots, I'm all ears. Bob Zone 7 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed...
