Kathleen, I was part of a project scrutinizing the effects of fragmentation on a tropical seasonal rain forest (Kakamega Forest in Kenya). I worked on Acanthus eminens (in the forest) and A. polystachyus (in disturbed habitats) which share most pollinators. There were clues suggesting they might compete for pollination and hybridize to the disadvantage of the forest species. Turns out, they donˋt. Apart from mentoring a Bachelor thesis or two each year I donˋt do much research anymore, but I am still fascinated by pollination as a process that can be absurdly precise and specific (orchids) or insanely messy (any flowering meadow).
