Hi Mike,
I have those same bulbs growing in pots (4 inches diameter by 3.5 inches high - 10 cm by 9 cm).  These pots are really too shallow, the roots need more room.  Mix is 50/50 pumice and cactus potting soil.  They are just under the edge of a bench, where they get filtered light until midday, after which they are in full shade.  They get watered every 4 days.  Your friends' situation sound ideal.  I would mix in pumice to 4 to 6 inches deep (10 to 15 cm).  This will keep the bulbs on the drier side, but allow for plenty of moisture for the deeper roots.
