Albuca batteniana

Hello David,

Albuca batteniana is unmistakably different from A. nelsonii. I grow
both, although my plant of A. batteniana is still a baby, it comes from
Issa Nursery in France. I first saw this Albuca in the garden of friends
who got it from the same nursery. It is a MASSIVE plant, much much
bigger than A. nelsonii which in itself is not a dwarf either.

A batteniana is not very tall but the leaves are very broad, 15cm or
more at the base and form an arching massive rosette. The bulbs tend to
divide and form huge clumps in time. Not a plant of fast growth, though.
The inflorescence looks similar but that I can only judge from pictures.
My own plant has not yet flowered and the one in the friends garden, I
have only seen it in the green but not in flower.

Here is a good picture but without a scale to give an idea of its size.

There are also some pictures on the website of Annie's Annuals but their
plants look different from mine.

The plant, not the flowers of course, looks somewhat similar to Kniphofa
northiae but the leaves are plain green.

A very lush and impressive architectural plant for a prominent position.

There is a lot of confusion with the names of Albuca, so hopefully you
do not have A. nelsonii instead.....

bye for now,

Uli
