A little more info on cold hardiness from St. Bonifacius, just west of Minneapolis, Minnesota (now zone 4b). Of course, L. xsquamigera is perfectly hardy here, and as you all say, it does do better in a hot sunny garden, than in a shade or part shade. In 2008 when we were still zone 4a, I received five (maybe three) L. chinensis from Jim W. A few stuck around for several years, and now I have just one. It bloomed for the first time in 2019, and bloomed this year, too. See attached.
